What Are Porcelain Veneers?

What Is the Procedure Like?

Generally, the process of getting porcelain veneers requires three easy appointments with Dr. Ross.

1. During the initial consultation, the entire process of getting porcelain veneers will be explained to the patient in detail, and any questions or concerns they might have will be addressed. A routine examination will be performed on the patient so Dr. Ross can ensure the patient is a good candidate for instant orthodontics. Sometimes he may need to take impressions or X-rays of the patient’s teeth and mouth. Once it has been determined that the patient is a good fit for this treatment, the second appointment will be scheduled.
2. At the second appointment, Dr. Ross will remove about ½ millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface. He will numb the affected area (or areas) with a local anesthetic, ensuring that the patient won’t experience any discomfort. After trimming off the exterior enamel, the dentist will then take impressions or models of the patient’s mouth. These impressions will then be sent off to a laboratory, where a team of specialists will create custom porcelain veneers. It usually takes two to three weeks for the dentist to receive the finished veneers. The patient will wear temporary veneers during this waiting period, so they will maintain a “normal” aesthetic appearance.
3. Once the veneers have been received, Dr. Ross will have the patient come in for a third appointment. Here, he will trim and polish each veneer as needed before permanently bonding them to the teeth. Veneers are permanently bonded to the teeth through the use of special bonding cement and a laser. After the bonding process has occurred, the dentist will further trim and polish the tooth the ideal aesthetic has been achieved.
